  • "Peaches for Sale" lyrics

Hi everyone. A couple of weeks ago I atteneded WUMB radio's Summer Acoustic Music Week. This was a wonderful week of music, friendship and haute cuisine on the shores of Lake Winnepesauke, New Hampshire.

At the open mic on Thursday night I played and sang my song "Peaches for Sale," ably accompanied by Mr. Scott Ainslie playing his National resonator guitar. Thank you, Scott! For those of you who asked, here are the lyrics:

    Peaches for Sale
    By Paul Martin Bauer

    Central California
    South side San Joaquin
    Highway 99
    degrees in the shade, black

    hair down to her Levi's
    boots up to her knees
    white shirt, brown skin
    like smooth Spanish leather

    And I said ...

    "Hola, señorita [Hello, miss]
"Me llaman 'Olvidato' [they call me 'forgotten one']
    "Are these your daddy's orchards?
    "Are these his fine trees?"

    And she said ...

"No tengo un papa [I don't have a papa]
"No tengo una mama [I don't have a mama]
"No tengo nada [I don't have anything]
    "but these peaches for sale"

    "Peaches for sale," she said
    "flesh just like candy
    "See how they hang
    "so free in the air
    "Ripe, but still young
    "Firm, but forgiving
    "Peaches for sale
    "Here in the sunshine"

    Drive through the desert
    Walk through a wasteland
    Wade muddy waters
    Death dry on your tongue
    The sand and the sagebrush
    Cactus and carrion
    Serpents in the shadows
    Across No-man's-land
    And you find ...

    Highway 25
    Socorro, New Mexico [socorro=succor, help]
motel dice nada [a motel that says nothing]
    sweaty sheets and warm beer

    And she said ...

    "Olvidado querido [beloved forgotten one]
    "I can't go to Mexico
    "Tengo California [I have California]
    "and my peaches for sale"

    Peaches for sale
    flesh just like candy
    see how they hang
    so free in the air
    Ripe, but still young
    Firm, but forgiving
    Peaches for sale
    Here in the sunshine

    Peaches for sale
    reach up your empty arms
pick 'em right from the orchard
pull 'em straight from the tree
    Peaches for sale
    fill up your emptiness
    peaches for sale
    here in the sunshine

    Peaches for sale
    I got peaches for sale

    Peaches for sale
    Peaches for sale

  • Many thankees to Kevin So for inviting me to sing a couple at his show this afternoon (www.teabagnyc.com / kevinso.com). Kev plays every Sunday afternoon in the heart of Chinatown, NYC, USA. It's a fun, relaxed atmosphere, with lots of guest artists stopping by and NO cover charge. And there's no such thing as a bad Kevin So show.
